Biography

Image of Daniel Mulhern

As a composer and songwriter I have worked in a variety of areas - from drama and serious arts, science and social documentaries, to entertaiment and comedy. Inclucding the BBC's How Art Made The World and Alternative Medicine. Entertainment shows with Derren Brown, Matt Lucas & David Walliams, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, and songs for Stephen Poliakoff dramas. I have recently finished working on Silent Witness (BBC Drama) for the second season running, assisting Sheridan Tongue and writing additional music.

My recent songwriting collaborators include Jon Allen (who has been on the BBC Radio 2 playlist regularly throught 2009) and Craig Gannon (The Smiths, Aztec Camera). My own songs have appeared in TV dramas including three different Stephen Poliakoff films.

As a guitarist, I can be heard on the work of other composers and songwriters, including scores for Stephen Poliakoff films and numerous BBC Dramas and documentaries. I utilise my intereting collection of instruments including folk instruments from South America and China, and vintage pedal steel and Gretsch guitars.

I didn't follow what could be considered a conventional route to composition. A self-taught guitarist and pianist, I played in various bands, then went on to cut my compositional teeth writing music for many students' films on the respected Animation and Film courses at the art college near where I grew up.

My first television composition job was for a Channel 4 documentary series in 2000, which quickly led to more TV music composing work and I'm happy to say that I've enjoyed regular work since.

"It is indeed offensive to be told to work for free (rarely do producers ask if it is acceptable). However, the choices are radically limited: if one doesn't compose (/record/mix) for free, one does not......"
