Screened Music News - Rob Lane Masterclass Overview
A huge thank you to Rob Lane for taking the time out of his hectic schedule to come and share some of his thoughts and working practices with us. This unique event, hosted in partnership with the Musician's Union, was a fascinating insight into the work of one the UK's most successful and highly-regarded screen composers.
Rob was kind enough to divulge some of the secrets behind his success, highlighting in particular the importance of self education through score analysis and how transcribing the works of Mahler, Wagner and Stravinsky helped him develop his own harmonic language.
He went on to discuss how he scored key scenes from recent television dramas such as Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Merlin, and his use of leitmotif to capture the emotional depth of the characters. He then took us through his painstakingly accurate process of mocking up a cue in the score page in Logic, and the various production tools he uses on a day to day basis.
