Screened Music News - "Winter Wonderland" - December's Festive Team Picks

Some rousing, festive music to help summon the Christmas spirit!

Picks

Children's Magical World by Andy Quin

Picked by Anne Nikitin

“Your quintessential Hollywood, fairytale-style score. Makes us feel like kids again! All the elements are there – sweeping strings, memorable themes, wonderful harmony. The live orchestra creates a real sense of dynamic contrast, light and shade. Just charming!”

Dimitri by Rodney Newton

Picked by Anne Nikitin

“What a wonderfully evocative, heart-warming piece of music. You’ve shown how beautiful, noble and moving brass bands music can be, especially when played by such accomplished musicians. Your use of suspensions is breathtaking and the melodies are lyrical and highly expressive. Also love the way it ends on a minor chord.”

The Lullaby by Stuart Fox

Picked by Anne Nikitin

“A very Christmassy track. Lovely choir writing. Simple, effective and ever so slightly reminiscent of Away In A Manger. In an appropriately jarring context, this is probably very funny! Can’t wait to see the film and Tom Jones’s c**k.”

Comedy Corpses by Andrew Barnabas

Picked by Anne Nikitin

“It’s never easy to do comic music but you’ve succeeded here! It relies on conventions without being clichéd. It develops constantly and this maintains the interest over the duration of the piece. There are moments of surprise syncopation; it’s highly rhythmic and harmonically sophisticated with lots of orchestral colour. There are also several sections where the music becomes dark and melancholic, and this heightens the comedy within the tongue-in-cheek passages.”

Mystical Flight by Michael England

Picked by Anne Nikitin

“Immediately creates an exciting, wintry effect with the tremelo violins, high metallic tuned percussion and choir. A great developmental section with the harp adds textural interest and warmth. Pretty, fragile and atmospheric, the music depicts exactly what you have described in your context.”
